marketing strategy and hands-on help for small businesses

Marketing got complicated. Your plan doesn't have to be.

We'll sort out what's working, what's worth doing next and what can wait. Then, if you'd like a hand with the work, I can stay on.

More than 25 years in marketing, nearly two decades of it on agency client teams.

01what owners are asking

If marketing feels harder than it used to, it's not you. It is harder.

There are more than 15,000 marketing tools now, up from about 150 in 2011. Google often answers a question on its own page before anyone clicks through. The social apps change their rules every few months. And most owners are fitting all of it into a few hours a week, between everything else they do.

Staying on top of all of it is what I do best, and what I enjoy most, so it doesn't have to land on you.

02a good place to start

Sometimes the answer is a few small changes, not a whole new plan.

The Walk-Through

A clear look at your marketing, and a short list of what to do next.

We go through what you're doing now, together: your website, your Google listing, your social, your email, your ads, whatever you have. You'll come away knowing what's working, what could go, and the handful of changes likely to help most, written in plain language so you can act on it with or without me.

It's a small, fixed-fee project, quoted before we start.

Ask about The Walk-Through
What it looks like
  • A conversation about your business, your customers and your goals
  • A look at everything you're doing now, and what it's costing in time and money
  • A short written plan: keep this, change this, this can wait
  • A follow-up call to go over it and answer questions
for some businesses, that list is all they need. that's a good outcome.
03if you'd like a hand with the work

Another option, beyond a big agency or a full-time hire.

Or doing it all yourself after hours. After a Walk-Through, or anytime, most clients keep going in one of two ways. Either can start small and grow with you.

no marketing person yet?

The House Marketer

Your marketing, handled.

You get an experienced marketer who knows your business, without hiring full time. I plan it, make it and keep it going, on a schedule that fits how you work.

What it looks like
  • A standing check-in with you
  • A plan for the next few months that we can both see
  • The work itself, made and posted, and a plain look at what it did

The Extra Desk

Your marketing team gets backup.

A second set of hands for the busy months, and someone to think out loud with. I work alongside them a few days a month, in your tools and with your brand guide.

What it looks like
  • One more person in your Slack or Teams, and a weekly check-in
  • Help sorting the long list down to what matters this quarter
  • One small experiment a month, with results
Ask about The Extra Desk
neither one quite right? we'll shape something that fits.
04how it works

It starts with a conversation.

1

We talk.

About your business, your customers and what's on your mind. In person or on a call, wherever you are.

2

We sort out what matters.

Usually through a Walk-Through: what's working, what to change and what can wait, written down.

3

You decide what's next.

Take the plan and run with it, or keep me on as your House Marketer or Extra Desk.

what the work can include

What's going on with your business?

Tell me a little about it. I'll write back myself within one business day, and we'll find a time to talk, in person or on a call.

Not sure what to say? Something like "We're doing a little of everything and can't tell what's working. Where do we start?" is plenty.

06about

Hi, I'm Kim.

I grew up in a small town in Aroostook County, Maine, on a potato farm my family still runs today. I had my first real job on this farm at the age of seven. Farm life teaches you early that the work gets done whatever the weather, and that you look out for the people working beside you. I've carried both into every job since.

I've spent more than 25 years in marketing, 20 of those years at a Maine agency, where I started as its first project manager and went on to lead the account services team. Along the way I've worked with businesses in financial services, automotive, professional services, consumer products and non-profits. I've also served on nonprofit boards, and graduated from the Maine Development Foundation's Institute for Civic Leadership.

Today, BrickHouse Brand Lab runs out of my brick house in the North Scarborough woods. When we work together, you get the work ethic of the farm, the experience of the agency years, and someone who knows what it's like to have your name on the sign.
